My Favorite Topic

I don’t blog too often and don’t claim to be that great at it.  I know the internet is flooded with people’s opinions and ideas about all different topics.  Some worth reading and some very much not.  I guess just like anything else, the info shared online follows Sturgeon’s Law.  Charles Sturgeon said that in any category 90% of what’s available is not exactly worthwhile and about 10% of it is excellent (I believe he spoke a little more scientifically, but that’s my take on it).  Being afraid to contribute to the 90% – I usually choose to hold my tongue.   But today I decided that I’d like to share about one of my favorite topics — my wife!us on yacht
A little over 10 years ago I hung out with a good friend and he introduced me to one of his good friends.  Her name was Teesa Orick.  It was almost instantly that I realized that a last name like ‘Rossman’ would be much more fitting for her, and she has now carried that name for more than 9 years.  God has blessed me extravagantly by giving me the opportunity to share these last 9 years of my life with her, and I have learned a lot from her.

Now, I don’t read a lot about the topic of being a good wife.  I confess, I have never really thought I would do a great job of it.  It always seemed that I was missing that one magic trait.  However, I have often read a portion of the Bible that speaks on the topic.  The book of Proverbs, in the Bible, is a collection of wise sayings and advice.  Most of it was written by King Solomon, who is said to be the wisest man to have walked the earth.  He compiled all of this wisdom as advice to his son.  However, the last part of the last chapter of the book talks about “A Wife of Noble Character.”  Here is what Proverbs has to say about such a wife;

Who can find a virtuous and capable wife?
   She is more precious than rubies.
Her husband can trust her,
   and she will greatly enrich his life.
She brings him good, not harm,
   all the days of her life.
She finds wool and flax
   and busily spins it.
She is like a merchant’s ship,
   bringing her food from afar.
She gets up before dawn to prepare breakfast for her household
   and plan the day’s work for her servant girls.
She goes to inspect a field and buys it;
   with her earnings she plants a vineyard.
She is energetic and strong,
   a hard worker.
She makes sure her dealings are profitable;
   her lamp burns late into the night.
Her hands are busy spinning thread,
   her fingers twisting fiber.
She extends a helping hand to the poor
   and opens her arms to the needy.
She has no fear of winter for her household,
   for everyone has warm clothes.
She makes her own bedspreads.
   She dresses in fine linen and purple gowns.
Her husband is well known at the city gates,
   where he sits with the other civic leaders.
She makes belted linen garments
   and sashes to sell to the merchants.
She is clothed with strength and dignity,
   and she laughs without fear of the future.
When she speaks, her words are wise,
   and she gives instructions with kindness.
She carefully watches everything in her household
   and suffers nothing from laziness.
Her children stand and bless her.
   Her husband praises her:
“There are many virtuous and capable women in the world,
   but you surpass them all!”
Charm is deceptive, and beauty does not last;
   but a woman who fears the Lord will be greatly praised.
Reward her for all she has done.
   Let her deeds publicly declare her praise.

Teesa has done a great deal of studying and modeling this specific passage of the Bible.  I believe it has been important to her to be a “Wife of Noble Character,” and she has done a wonderful job of it.  I could spend days, I could even write a whole book about the things that make her such a wonderful wife but today I will choose to touch on just a few.

The first few things that she does that makes her such a Wife of Noble Character are straight from this passage.  The woman that is written about in the above passage seems to be very good with her money and quite thrifty.  Teesa has been that way since the day I met her.  Very rarely does she even think to spend money on her own comforts or luxuries.  It is much more often that she looks for a way to spend less on a particular item, cut money from a certain part of our budget, or try to save more.  Teesa puts the needs of our family before her own and she has supported me in the majority of the financial decisions for our family and even been there for advice and perspective when we had to make difficult financial choices.  She is generous and since I’ve known her has had a heart for those in need.

It is also said about the woman in the above passage that “When she speaks, her words are wise, and she gives instructions with kindness.”  Teesa has always impressed me with how wise she is, wise quite beyond most people I know her age (myself included).  Because of her beliefs and priorities it seems that she is always able to make the right decision and to give the right advice.  Like the woman mentioned in Proverbs, Teesa gives instructions with kindness.  Not only is she kind with her words, but because of her wisdom there are many people who seek her advice.  As her husband, I am very comforted and encouraged by the way Teesa uses her words.  Not only is she kind to me when I am around, but I can also be confident that she is kind to me when I am not.  She never complains or says bad things about me when I’m not around.  It is very nice to know that my wife rarely speaks about me behind my back, but when she does – I know she is saying kind and encouraging things.

The last thing I will write about today (though, like I said, I could write many many more things) is her work ethic.  There are many things in this passage from Proverbs that gives the impression that this woman is a hard worker.  Teesa is the same way.  She is very productive with her time.  So productive in fact that she is continuously asked by different groups and organizations to help them out.  Though she guards her time and is only willing to commit to the things that will further our family and her other priorities.  It is because of this that she has been able to excel in all of the fields that she has committed to.  She is an amazing mother to our two children.  She is a fantastic home-school teacher.  She is a tremendous help in the business that we own.  She is a solid contributor at her women’s Bible study.  She mentors many women quite successfully.  She often volunteers for different projects at our church.  Yet somehow, even though committed to all of these tasks – she still finds a way to be an incredible wife to a sometimes challenging husband.

This article could have been a portion of a chapter of a several volume book had I chose to write all of the things that make Teesa Rossman a Wife of Noble Character.  Every time I think back to the time when I tricked her into marrying a guy like me I feel incredibly grateful.  She is not only my very best friend and the most fun girl in the world, she is also an inspiration to me and many others.  She is one of my life’s greatest blessings and I am proud to call her my running mate in life.
